Start with the Eisenhorn, Tanith, and Ultramarines series. Best introduction to main 40k. I guess starting with the Horus Heresy series is not a bad idea, but I think it takes away all the fun of recognizing certain things in HH. IMO, read Gaunt's Ghosts and the Eisenhorn/Ravenor series.
