The average vrchat user is an absolute beginner when it comes to any kind of 3D work, and using fairly featureless flat-lit shading lets them hide some otherwise very obvious bad techniques. World creators also come into this too, because toon shaders can work with very bad light setups, which a lot of worlds have.
