They're actually both the same. Well for the most part - I believe at least cams, tuning, and fuel injectors are different. It would be a great project to swap in an LS1 or the Ford 4.6 into your SLK230. Just be prepared for lots of work, headaches, time, and cost.

My e350 brings up all sort of engine problems along the line with maintenance and I don’t want to deal with it anymore. I know its costly and people would say to buy a e500 or 550 to replace my e350 but ...the 124 chassis was *designed* for an inline 6. a v8 is a really tight squeeze. the factory V8 cars were *heavily* modified, battery moved to the trunk, heavy reinforcements to the chassis, etc. while you CAN hack a M119 (4.2, 5.0) into a 300E, its not even remotely easy and its even harder to do a decent job of it. start with a 400E/E420 if ...R129 LS500 Mercedes.
