I tend to play pretty much the same build, at least for the traits, most of the time. But, regarding ethics, I like to change a lot so every game is different. For a Ring start, yeah, fanatic materialist seems to be the best, but for a MegaCorp (regardless of the origin), I think xenophile is better (more friends, more branch offices).

This is a writeup on the best ship designs in Stellaris v 3.8.3, and yes I know it's quite long. There is a Synopsis with the conclusions at the end of the post. It’s not going to include the best fleet designs, though I think we might be able to make some inferences. It is going to be focused on PvE, but a lot of these designs will also be a ...Cheap starbases that provide the critical mass of alloy-inputs will let you scale up your alloy economy faster than you'd normally be able to afford, with 10-ish starbases in 10 systems letting you use the energy/food to carry your early economy for a buildup to start snowballing. 2. Natural Sociologists (1): +15% Society research. Traditional (1): +10% Unity Output. The negatives can be anything, but these are the good ones that don't really hurt your game-play much compared to the others, assuming you're trying to min-max. Anglers and the food to alloys perk is pretty OP currently, other ethics largely irrelevant to this build. It just allows basically infinite alloy production in limited space, especially late game if you find yourself sheltering in ringworlds. The food to alloys civic is also pretty great for robots, and for the same reason. They can trade resources with other empires, but they can't create the resource "trade". Second: In Stellaris automation is really just a feature to reduce micromanagement - let the game manage the production queue on some planets, for example. This feature is available to everyone. This is a very straightforward and strong build. It stacks lots of bonuses to the most important jobs, namely the Researcher (to advance through the tech tree) and Metallurgist (to produce ships), as well as boosting secondary jobs like the Bureaucrat and Artisan. It's very straightforward to play and quite strong. It essentially trades the +2 admin, -10% upkeep for +1 stability, +1 unity. You could still make a paperwork planet, but it wouldn't make much use of the stability bonus. Not sure if the trade off is worth it if you can instead take Police State and just get a flat +5 stability. Completely overcome the necrophage worker malus since you'll have plenty of slaves to work for you. The main cons are : Some pop micromanagement even for just 3-5 planets.
